Olympic Thoughts

Why wasn't this hyped more in advance of the Games? The opening ceremony (boring again) was suddenly on television, though only for a few minutes in my house.

I watched 5 soccer (or fútbol) games on Telemundo this past weekend, and an observation from that time was reinforced by the schedule listing announced on NBC late last night. The TV coverage seems to be heavily programmed according to demographic/stereotype.

  • weird sport with checkered white ball and lots of kicking that's still not very popular in the USA for some reason on Telemundo, unless the USA is playing and then it's on CNBC

  • gymnastics and swimming and such so far on NBC: is this really the only stuff they think mainstream America is interested in? Why not primetime Olympic baseball?

  • Tennis, fencing, and... badminton on Bravo: intended for the rich culture snobs, I guess.

  • beach volleyball on NBC, but after midnight, and with both men's and women's teams in skimpy swimsuits... Oh, Behave!
